Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding How Therapy Works

What happens in the consultation?

The initial consultation offers you an opportunity to experience what it is like to work with me and to get a sense of whether psychotherapy with me feels right for you.

During this session, you are invited to talk openly about yourself and any difficulties, concerns, or anxieties that have led you to seek therapy. The space is safe, confidential, and non-judgemental, and you are encouraged to share only what feels comfortable for you.

You are also welcome to ask any questions you may have about me, my way of working, or about therapy more generally.

There is no expectation to make a decision immediately. Many people find it helpful to take some time to reflect after the first meeting, and in some cases a second session can be useful before deciding whether to begin therapy on an ongoing basis.

How long are the sessions?

The initial consultation lasts for 90 minutes.

Weekly sessions for individuals take place at the same time on the same day and they last for 50 minutes.

How long will therapy take?

Therapy takes time. Difficulties that have developed over many years are unlikely to be resolved quickly, and meaningful emotional change tends to happen gradually rather than all at once. Lasting growth and understanding usually unfold over months, and sometimes years, rather than days or weeks.

In a world that often promises quick fixes and rapid solutions, therapy offers a different approach — one that values depth, reflection, and sustainable change. Progress is often subtle and cumulative, becoming clearer when you look back over time rather than from one session to the next.

The pace and length of therapy will vary for each person and depend on many factors, including what you bring to therapy, your goals, and the complexity of the issues you wish to explore. Therapy moves at a pace that aims to be both respectful and supportive of your capacity and needs.

What do therapists know about therapy?

All therapists have undertaken substantial personal therapy as part of their training and ongoing development. This means they have experienced therapy from the client’s perspective and understand many of the vulnerabilities and challenges involved.

This personal experience also fosters a deep trust in the therapeutic process. I have great confidence in the effectiveness of psychotherapy and counselling, and in the power of the therapeutic relationship to support deep and lasting change in how we understand ourselves and how we live our lives.

At its best, therapy can expand our capacity to relate, to love, and to be loved.

Will my therapist give me advice?

A therapist’s role is not to tell you how to live your life, but to support you in understanding yourself and finding the path that feels right for you. Therapy is about exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, rather than following someone else’s guidance.

For this reason, therapists generally do not offer specific advice or instructions. Instead, they remain neutral regarding the decisions you make, creating a space where you can reflect, gain clarity, and make choices that are aligned with your own values and needs. This approach helps you build confidence in your own judgment and supports your personal autonomy.
