Fixed-Term Counselling

Support Within a Clear Timeframe

Fixed-term (or time-limited) counselling takes place over an agreed number of sessions — often 12–24, depending on your needs.

For many people, having a defined start and end feels containing and reassuring. It helps focus the work, maintain momentum, and provide direction during a challenging period.

What It Is — and Isn’t

Fixed-term counselling is not about rushing, quick fixes, or minimising your experiences. It is still relational, reflective therapy, focused on understanding rather than advice.

What makes it different:

  • The number of sessions is agreed in advance
  • The focus is limited and clearly defined
  • Endings are built into the process

This structure helps both client and therapist work thoughtfully with time, priorities, and goals.

When It Can Help

Fixed-Term Therapy can help when you feel stuck and want clarity, insight, or understanding of current patterns

Fixed-term counselling may be useful if you:

  • Are facing a specific issue or life transition
  • Want support with a defined difficulty (anxiety, loss, relationship strain, work stress)
  • Prefer a contained, time-limited approach
  • Are unsure about committing to open-ended therapy
  • Want to try therapy to see if it feels right for you

It can also help when you feel stuck and want clarity, insight, or understanding of current patterns.

What We Focus On

Within a fixed timeframe, therapy often focuses on:

  • Understanding what brings you to therapy now
  • Exploring emotional patterns linked to your current difficulty
  • Developing greater emotional awareness and choice
  • Strengthening coping and self-understanding

The goal is not to “solve” everything, but to support meaningful reflection and progress within the time available.

The Importance of the Ending

Endings are an integral part of fixed-term counselling. Talking about the ending early allows space to explore feelings about separation, change, and transition.

For some, endings can bring sadness, relief, anxiety, or a mix of emotions. Exploring these responses can offer insight into how you experience attachment, loss, and change.

What It Can’t Do

Fixed-term counselling may not be suitable if:

  • You are dealing with complex or longstanding trauma
  • You need longer-term containment
  • You want to explore very deep or early experiences

In these cases, open-ended therapy may be more appropriate.

Fixed-term counselling provides a structured, supportive space to reflect, understand, and move forward

Moving Forward

Deciding if fixed-term counselling is right for you is a collaborative process. A thoughtful assessment can clarify what feels most supportive.

Your needs may change, and the plan can always be reviewed to decide next steps.

Fixed-term counselling provides a structured, supportive space to reflect, understand, and move forward.

For many, this focused approach feels manageable, purposeful, and respectful of where they are in life. You are welcome to explore whether it might suit you, one step at a time.
